9 Warning Signals During Pregnancy Exercise

Exercise helps one battle the physical and emotional discomfort tied to pregnancy. It helps you sleep better, builds stamina and keeps you in shape.

The health care provider briefs expectant women on the exercises safe during pregnancy. But, they have an upper limit too. Pushing the body beyond this limit increases the risk of complications.

There’s one thing good about our body. It will let you know when there’s a problem and when you should stop. You only need to listen closely. So, before you start exercising take time to learn the signs to watch out for.

Dizziness or slight light headedness is a common pregnancy symptom in the second trimester. If you feel dizzy, you should refrain from exercising to prevent mishaps. Rest for a while. Lying down on your side will help.

If during exercise you feel dizzy, stop. If dizziness is accompanied by blurred vision, headaches or heart palpitations speak to your health care provider. These signs are indications of severe anemia. Dizziness could also imply that your brain is not getting its required supply of oxygen or it could also be a sign of dehydration.

Muscle metabolism in the stomach stimulates the production of lactic acid. An excess buildup of lactic acid is usually the cause of nausea during and after a workout. If you experience nausea, take a break and relax. If the squeamish feeling persist even after you have cooled down, call your health care provider.

Sudden rise in body temperature is damaging to the growing fetus. In order to regulate the body temperature the body diverts blood flow to the skin where earlier it was directed to the uterus. Thus, your baby could be in distress. It could also cause birth defect.

How will you understand your body is overheating? You may get hot and cold flashes. Your hands may get sweaty. If this happens, back off and rest. Go slow on hot days. Make sure you drink a lot of water when exercising.

Racing Heartbeat

It is natural to get tired after a session of exercise. But excessive sweating or increased heart palpitations (so fast that you cannot catch your breath), indicates that you’re over exercising your body and need to slow down. Your heart beat should return to normal after you have cooled down.

Pain And Swelling In The Calves

This is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. Puffy hands and feet in pregnancy are caused due to fluid retention. Also, the hands and feet may look a little more swollen after a session of exercise. However, painful, swollen and red calves could be the signs of thrombophlebitis, a blood clot.

Vaginal Bleeding And Fluid Leak

These two symptoms also call for attention. Both are signs of preterm labor. Vaginal bleeding could also hint at fetal complications such as placenta abruption or placenta previa. In the first trimester vaginal bleeding is a sign of miscarriage. The same goes for vaginal fluid leaks. You may experience a gush of water or may notice your underpants getting wet. Don’t wait; head to the hospital or your doctor’s office.

Unusual Abdomen In The Pain And Chest

Pain in the abdomen, back and hips is an indication that the ligaments have been stretched enough for the day and now need rest. However, monitor the intensity and frequency of the pain. If after resting the pains persist and seem to get more regular, they are contractions.

Blurred Vision

Blurred vision is a sign of dehydration. Dehydration causes the blood pressure to dip. Blurred vision could also be an indication of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia reduces the blood flow to the placenta.

Severe Headache

Long lasting and severe headaches are another sign of preeclampsia.
