9th Week of Pregnancy – Transition from an “Embryo” to “Fetus”

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the third month. A month more and you will be done with the tricky first trimester. By week 9, you’re pregnancy is officially confirmed. You’ve probably had your first ultrasound and heard your baby’s heartbeat go “wow-wow-wow”. 

So, what are the other surprises lined up for you in the 9th week of pregnancy? There are many. But, it is also about time you started thinking about maternity leave, stashing away some cash and shopping for chic maternity wear. 

Baby Development 

The main reason why your baby is no longer called an embryo is because major systems have developed. Besides, the near perfect physical and facial features make the fetus to look more baby like. 

At 9 weeks, the fetus is the size of a green olive and measures 1 inch in length. The heart is completely developed. The fetal heartbeat is strong enough to be detected by a fetal Doppler. The development of facial features continues even in the 9th week. The eyelids form. This week may also usher in fetal hiccups.

The bones in the arms and legs have hardened. The toes and fingers are no longer webbed. Each digit is distinctly visible. Not only this, the baby’s skeleton also starts hardening. Ossification of the bones is followed by the formation of cartilage. Your baby at this stage also starts building muscle. It is gradual, but enough to get him moving. The legs move while the hands can extend to reach the face. 

You will also observe a few hair follicles and the nipples. The digestive system continues to get complex. The intestines grow in length. Other organs that develop are the pancreas, the gall bladder, the bile ducts and the anus. Your little one’s reproductive organs also start developing internally.

Changes to your Body

Your baby’s getting active by the day. On the contrary, you feel so wiped out that all you want to do is lie down and take a long nap. You’re body is working more than its capacity to provide nourishment for your baby and to create the perfect environment for it. Making it worse is the nauseous feeling. Don’t worry both fatigue and morning sickness will subside by the end of this trimester. 

The HCG levels are at its peak. They make you moody and can also cause light headiness and headaches. The hormone levels will stabilize by the start of the next week. Weight begins to creep in. You can expect to put on 1-5 pounds by the end of the first trimester.

Your uterus has grown to the size of the tennis ball. The lower abdomen feels firm. Incontinence and frequenting peeing are other pregnancy symptoms you will have to cope with. You may also notice changes to your skin and hair. The hair feels thick. Women also report changes in libido. Some lose interest in sex while some report a sudden increase in libido.

Activities for the week

  • Severe vomiting may cause dehydration. Drink plenty of water or juices to restore water content in the body.
  • Digestion also slows down. Take walks to rev up digestion.
  • You can join a pregnancy support group to deal with the stress and anxiety of pregnancy.
  • Speak to your partner about how you feel.
  • You need to prepare for your second prenatal visit. It is shorter than the first but more or less the same. It measures vitals such as your weight, blood pressure and sugar and protein in the urine. You can also prepare your list of pregnancy questions and concerns.
