Conception After A Miscarriage: Precautions To Keep In Mind

There is no bigger loss to a mother than losing her unborn child. It is indeed devastating.  But greater than the physical and emotional trauma of a miscarriage is the multitude of emotions she experiences when she tries to conceive again.  It is hope mingled with fear in addition to the doubts and queries.

When Is The Right Time To Try?

When is the right time to start trying to conceive again? – This is the first and most common question we receive from women who have suffered a miscarriage.  

There is no specific time duration. Some medical practitioners state that women should allow the body minimum three months to heal while some recommend a shorter latency period. As a general rule, majority gynecologists advise women to wait until after the first menstrual period. This is an indication that the HCG levels have been restored to pre-pregnancy or non-pregnancy levels. The menstrual cycle generally returns to normal within 4 -6 weeks after a miscarriage. 

Mental Preparation

Physical wounds heal faster than the emotional ones. Doctors suggest that more than physical readiness to try again couples should consider if they are emotionally ready.

If you are still struggling to find the answer to the so many “Whys and What ifs” in your mind, take time to grieve. Don’t rush into another pregnancy without regaining emotional stability. The emotional stress may have a negative impact on your efforts at conception.  You can even consult a therapist to help you cope with a miscarriage particularly if you have suffered repeated miscarriages.

A Gynecological Examination

A medical examination becomes necessary to determine the particular precautions you may have to keep in mind considering the type of loss and the causes of miscarriage in your previous pregnancy.

A thorough medical examination is not usually recommended for women who have experienced only one miscarriage. However, it is a good option to get it done. This includes an examination to determine the health of the cervix and the uterine. It helps treat issues if any at the right time.

Successive miscarriages (two or more than two) and those occurring during the later stages of pregnancy (up 20 weeks is normal and common) indicate congenital malformations, Uterine abnormalities, autoimmune factors, hormonal imbalances or metabolic disorders. These need to be treated to reduce the risk of a miscarriage in future. Thus, extensive testing becomes a must in these cases. Tests your doctor might ask you to take are blood tests, chromosomal tests, ultrasounds, hysteroscopy, hysterosalpingography and sonohysterogram.

 Increase Chances Of A Healthy Pregnancy

Once you’ve spoken to your doctor, you can follow these simple tips and increase chances of a healthy pregnancy.

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices both before conception and during pregnancy.
  • Take the recommended pregnancy vitamins regularly
  • Maintain healthy weight; neither overweight nor underweight
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Incorporate physical activity in your routine
  • Effective stress management
  • Give up alcohol, smoking and recreational drugs

So, don’t lose hope. Miscarriages are considered a one-time occurrence. You can have a healthy baby and a successful pregnancy after a miscarriage. Believe that things will work out fine this time and they surely will.
